Are there only British players in the squad?
No, over the years dozens of different nationalities have turned out for Britanicos and we pride ourselves on being an international club. Players come from many different backgrounds and cultures but we all share the same passion for football and a common language in English. Currently the core of the squad is from the UK, Ireland, Spain and the USA.
Why do you play on Sunday? Isn't Saturday football normally a better standard?
In Spain the traditional kick off time at all levels (before TV companies started moving them) was 5pm on Sundays, much like the 3pm Saturday kick off in the UK.
As a result adult league games in the Spanish football pyramid, outside of the top few leagues, are played on a Sunday. There are private leagues that play on Saturday, but these are more equivalent to the UK's Sunday League football.
What is the standard and style of football like?
Spanish football is generally slower and less physical than football in the UK and Ireland with more emphasis on ball retention. Physical play is also more harshly penalised than in British and Irish football. For more information about the style of football, our Head Coach Neil Moran and midfielder Tom Allnut were interviewed by The Spanish Football Podcast and you can listen to their description of Spanish football here.
Most of our players have played at a good amateur standard elsewhere: generally around step 6/7 in England, around the 5th tier in Ireland, the Amateur League in Northern Ireland. The club takes competitive football seriously and aspires to pay at the highest level possible.
How can I try out as a new player?
The first step is to get in touch with our management team to arrange a trial session with the team. During August in pre-season we also hold trials and pre-season friendlies where new players can train alongside established squad members.
To get in touch contact first team coach Neil on +34 609 754 169 or email the club directly at info@futbolclubbritanico.com.
If you are selected to become part of the first team, you will have to be registered with the Madrid FA. This will involve a medical examination and the transfer of your playing registration from your home federation. Both of these steps are mandatory to play federated football in Spain.
When and where is training and games?
For the 2021/22 season both sides played their home games at Instalaciones Deportivas La Unión, although that may change for the upcoming season. Both teams play Sunday with kick-off times usually in the early afternoon. Away fixtures can be at any time from 9am to 8pm.
Our home pitch is accessible by Metro (stations Sierra de Guadalupe or Villa de Vallecas on Metro Line 1, Santa Eugenia or Vallecas on the Cercanias). If you have a car, there is ample parking near the pitch.
Both teams compete in leagues in the south east of Madrid, so our opponents are typically from Rivas, Vicalvaro, Vallecas, Santa Eugenia. All of the pitches are accessible by public transport.
What kind of surfaces do you play on?
Almost all of the pitches in Madrid are 4G, so moulded studs or astroturf trainers are the ideal footwear.
How much will it cost me to play? What do I get for my money?
The running costs for the club are in excess of 20,000 euros per year, with the majority of this spent on the 4G playing and training surfaces, league fees, referees and equipment.
Everyone who signs for the club pays an initial signing-on fee of 100 euros. This is comprised of:
Monthly training fees are currently 35euro (25euro for students), which includes an average of eight sessions per month with our UEFA-licensed coaches on RFFM pitches in the city. Our strength and conditioning coach is also on-hand to help with any issues you may have.
Do I need to speak Spanish to play in Spain/this team?
No, although we are proud of our roots in Madrid we are an English-speaking football club.
Why do two Britanicos clubs appear on Google?
Once upon a time, there was only one Futbol Club Britanico in Madrid. However, like all of the best organisations (Queen, The Beatles, Oasis) artistic differences led to a split resulting in two seperate clubs.
The current Futbol Club Britanico team was formed by the majority of the former federated regional league players and management. We compete in the federated leagues' pyramid system with promotion and relegation, and which plays on a Sunday.
The other team play in the Bunwer league, a one-tier system with no promotion or relegation. Our reserve team previously played in a similar league called Liga Iberos.
